Novas Frequências Festival is South America’s main international event on experimental music and sound explorations. Taking place every first week of December in Rio de Janeiro, the programme happens in different city places and presents activities that range from concerts, sound performances, installations, sound walks, club nights, commissioned and site specific projects, talks and workshops.
Novas Frequências was born in 2011 always in search of artists that break pre-established frontiers looking for new sound languages. For the festival, sound experiences and the exploration of its limits are more relevant than genre and music styles – what makes Novas Frequências closer to contemporary art than to music as entertainment.
Some of the artists Novas Frequências hosted in the past presenting them for the first time in Brazil are: William Basinski, Tim Hecker, Ben Frost, Stephen O’Malley, The Bug, Actress, Oren Ambarchi, Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland, Moritz von Oswald, Fennesz, Keiji Haino, Xiu Xiu, RP Boo, Vladislav Delay, Milka Vaino, Lawrence English, Andy Stott, Sun Araw, Pole, Lea Bertucci, David Toop, Demdike Stare, Aki Onda, Phill Niblock, Philip Jeck, Aisha Devi, Tomoko Sauvage, Ashley Paul, Julianna Barwick, Lee Gamble, Laraaji and many more.
